Recovery Week

With 2 half marathons in 8 days I thought I should properly recover this week.

After Sunday's trail half and "cold water bath," I took it easy the rest of Sunday and all of Monday.  My legs felt a little tired on Tuesday but my quads and calves were not sore (hooray!) and I wanted to move my legs around.  A friend talked me into going to spinning with her that night.

So I bit the bullet and renewed my gym membership after a 5 month hiatus.

Thursday work was closed for a Jewish holiday.  I met my husband for Indian buffet lunch then swung by my favorite bakery ever.  (Alyssa and Kari can skip past this part because they have strong willpower and are 2 weeks into their dessert ban leading up to their marathons this month).

For the fellow coffee fan, the coffee buttercream frosting is AMAZING.

Amazing, I tell you!

Their cinnamon buns are pretty special too.

That night, I went to spinning again, followed by a 1/2 hr abs class.

And Friday morning my abs were SORE.  Admittedly, I haven't done much for them since the Fit Abs Challenge that ended in early August.

Saturday I decided it was time to run again.  My goal was to run at a comfortable pace but with still with some effort for a favorite 3 mile loop.  I tried to not look at my watch too much.

I ran 3.18 miles and surprised myself with my splits: 9:50, 9:40, 9:15, followed by a .18 mile jog then walk cool down.  Apparently my spinning classes did not do enough to wear me out and I had lots of energy to get out of my system.  The run didn't feel like I was running that hard, though the cooler weather might be to blame/credit.  I didn't run until noon and it was only 62 out.  It was glorious!

Back to the gym:

Tuesday I dropped 94 big ones to get myself gym access-- including group classes-- through the end of 2011.  AND a free sample of deodorant.

If you could smell me, today I smell like a rain kissed water lily.

The low cost, for me, is the main perk of going to a university gym.

Group classes are included which is a huge plus too.

They offer a bunch of classes, but my main interests are boot camp, spinning, and abs.  I don't see myself as a zumba person, the kickboxing paled in comparison to my previous cardio kickboxing classes at a martial arts place, but I hope to try yoga or pilates sometime in the future.

Some of the drawbacks?
  • 2nd day at the gym and "looking good for spring break" has already been mentioned
  • Realizing current freshmen are 10 years younger than me
  • I was the oldest person in Tuesday's spin class (aside from the instructor)
    • one of the girls in the class loudly said the room "smelled like moth balls"
      • The room did not smell like moth balls
      • But I hope this was a reference to some of the older women leaving the room from yoga, not my friend and me-- soooo old in our mid-late 20s
  • At one point during Thursday's ab class, out of 30 people, one student, another "regular" (university staff, not a student) and I were the only ones doing all the ab exercises.  The room was sooo loud because people were talking to eachother and not following along with the instructor. ONE girl was texting!!
    • A) So rude to the instructor
    • B) If you're taking up a spot in class, you better be working. Why else are you there?

Emily has touched on this recently, and I completely share her opinions.

I'll get over it.  Because it's cheap.  And at these classes - the undergrads will start dropping like flies in a couple weeks anyway :)
So to summarize:
This time around, my recovery included: very cold water bath, spinning, abs, baked goods, and a short run at the end of the week.

I'm ready to get running again!

Questions for you:
Do you belong to a gym?  University or other?
What's your usual post-race recovery routine?

6 mile run

Sunday I needed a lazy morning again.  Though I didn’t sleep in as late as Saturday!  Still late by my normal standards, but I was up by 9.

We walked over to the Sunday farmer’s market that is very close to our apartment (last one of the year) and there was a rather poor showing.  Which is surprising, because it was another beautiful fall day – upper 50s and sunny, no chance of rain.  Got some broccoli and a tomato, and that was about it.  We were ready to pick up some pies or other baked goods from a nearby orchard if they had showed... oh well.

As per the training plan that will be guiding my running for the next month, I went for a 6 mile long/easy run today.  Supposed to be at a 12:47 pace.  sooo sloooow.

My handy dandy Garmin gives me my average pace per mile.  I ran faster for the first and last miles (road/neighborhood) and slower in the middle (through the park) because I stopped often to take pictures!
  • Mile 1: 10:34
  • Mile 2: 11:31
  • Mile 3: 11:04
  • Mile 4: 11:46
  • Mile 5: 12:02
  • Mile 6: 10:31
  • .08 nubbin (cool down) : 16:20

Then I put my camera away as I left the park and finished my run.

Sunny and mid to upper 50s was the perfect weather for running, and I think definitely contributed to me running faster (for me) in the first and last miles.  I have to remind myself what is appropriate running clothing for cooler weather.  The wind made it feel cooler than it was, and I was ready to put on crops and/or a long sleeve shirt... but I went with my pink short sleeve Nike dri-fit shirt from last year's Turkey Trot and shorts, which was a good choice.

Want. to. run.

While fighting off this cold, I ran 2 miles Friday morning.  I noticed my heart rate was wayyy too high for an easy 2 mile run (hit the 190 mark!).

 Not Good!

Maybe I should post the one with elevation to explain the dips in HR.

Still not good though!  HR should be more like in the 160s for me for this run.

I came home, got ready, thought I'd grab a dose of cold medicine just in case I needed it at work.  While looking at the box, I realized that the night before, I apparently took double the recommended dose.  The kind with pseudoephedrine in it.  Whoops.  Since Thursday night I have not taken any more cold medicine.

Luckily, I am also feeling better by now, and reeeally want to run.  But, my in-laws are visiting, and so I have not had much of a chance to go running this weekend despite the beautiful fall weather, and it's driving me nuts.  They're here til tomorrow morning at some point, and I expect it to be pretty crazy trying to get 4 people ready and out the door tomorrow morning, so I am not anticipating being able to run before work tomorrow.

Yesterday was low to mid 60s and sunny - perfect!  We went to a nearby "living history farm" yesterday because there was a quilting bee of interest to my mother-in-law.  Did not take any pictures of the quilts.  But I did take pictures outside.

We saw some pigs

Some sheep

Pretty fall day!

Some more leaves starting to change

Just came back from brunch.  Between my husband and I we had eggs benedict with home fries and pumpkin bread pancakes!  Yummm.  This is one of our favorite restaurants, and we haven't had brunch there in a while.  It was fantastic.

Going to go for a walk with the in-laws in one of the nearby parks now; hoping I can sneak out for a run after dinner tonight.

"Smoothie" & ifitness Test Run

I made a smoothie last night.  I'm using the term smoothie loosely, and only calling it that because it involved a real banana.

I wanted to make it with coconut milk as well, however, when I opened up the coconut milk leftovers, it smelled a little funky so down the drain it went.  I added a little skim milk and a couple ice cubes.  And because of the ice cubes, I actually made it in our blender, instead of with the hand mixer.

I went to bed with the intention of running in the morning.  I laid out all my stuff last night.  My alarm went off at something like 6:45 this morning and it was still dark out.  My throat was a little dry (I really hope I'm not getting sick)  so I drank some water. And I decided to get back in bed and sleep in until 7:30 instead.  That gave me 8 full hours of sleep.  Since I may be fighting off a cold, I think I made the right choice (though maybe not the best choice with regard to my beverage last night).

I had nothing going on after work today so I went for a run when I got home from work instead.  Tried out my ifitness double pouch on my 4.3 mile run.

I brought my camera with me hoping to snap some pretty fall shots.  The leaves are not as vibrant as I'd expect!  And some are still green. Must be too early.  Regardless, if I haven't said it enough already, I love the park we live near.

It was easy enough to get my camera in and out of the pouch, and I didn't have to worry about "what if I lose my balance and fall on my face, using my camera to catch my fall."  It was comfortable to wear.  It did not ride up; it stayed below the waist band of my shorts the whole time.  The pouch did not jiggle with the camera inside.  I tried the belt with the pouch in a number of positions (front, both sides, back).  I couldn't feel the pouch on me, except for when the pouch with camera inside was resting on my bum - it kinda moved with my bum-muscles.  I found it more comfortable slightly off center: on my back/hip, side, or front/side.  Between my shorts and my ifitness belt, it did get a little warm (not quite sweaty), but my camera stayed dry inside.
